Beware of Craigslist Purchases!!
Buying a car is a big decision, and can sometimes be a scary process, especially if someone is trying to take advantage of you. Here at Smart Motors, we try to provide enough valuable information, regardless if you purchase from us or not, to try to help you make the right buying decision. One of the topics we are passionate about educating everyone on is the reasons why to avoid purchasing a vehicle from Craigslist or a private party.
The price tag may be appealing
Yes, the lower price tag buying from a private party can be very tempting. You will find vehicles listed a lot lower than what they would sell for at a dealership, but there is good reason for it. When you purchase from a dealership, you get a lot of benefits that make up for the price difference. As long as you are purchasing from a reputable dealership, all vehicles are inspected, reconditioned, and serviced prior to sale. This ensures you are purchasing a vehicle that is not only safe, but will be reliable for years to come. When purchasing from a private party, you do not know the last time it was serviced, it if was done at a reputable shop, or if has major issues that will cost you a lot soon down the road(engine, transmissions issues, etc.) Paying a little more at a dealership initially will pay off in the long run.
No Warranty Included
As soon as you hand over the money and drive off from the person you purchased your vehicle from, the relationship ends there. If there is an issue with the car a day, week, or a year down the road it is not their problem. When purchasing from a dealership, warranties are available either included in the purchase price (the best value) or you can purchase them for an additional cost. Warranties can save a lot of money on major repairs. Purchasing a car is a big investment, a warranty will help protect your investment, and your wallet.
When purchasing from a dealership you have the benefit on knowing the vehicle history before you make the decision to purchase. Being well informed of the history is very important. Yes, you can purchase a report if you are purchasing from a private party, (free when purchasing from dealership) but sometimes they are difficult to understand. A dealership representative is happy to help explain any questions you may have while looking over the CarFax.
Confusion and Title problems
Car titles are difficult to understand, and without knowing how the process works, you could be setting yourself up for a headache in the future. If you purchase a vehicle from a private party and they still have a lien (meaning they still have a loan on the vehicle), they will not be able to hand the title over to you when you buy. They will have to pay off their loan, and once the bank receives the funds, it usually takes 10 business days for the title to be issued. If they don’t follow the DMV’s process exactly, you have the risk of never receiving the title, which means you can’t prove ownership of the vehicle. If you ever want to trade it in or sell it later down the road, there can be many issues that will take a lot of time to get sorted out. There is also the risk of when you purchase from a private party that you could be purchasing a salvaged title car or a car with mileage rollback issues. These issues are easily disguised on a title and may make your car worthless when it comes time to sell it or trade it into a dealership. Best practice to is purchase from a dealership who are obligated by law to disclosures of most title problems unlike a private party seller. Don’t pay $5,000 for a car from a private seller and find out you should of only paid $500 because of a title issue. There are constant stories of people getting taken as a result of a crafty and deceitful seller on Craigslist.
